Melissa Barrera returns to horror with Inhabit

MELISSA Barrera

Melissa Barrera is heading back into horror territory with Inhabit, a new supernatural thriller from writer-director Adam Alleca. The film is being described as a blend of psychological horror and supernatural dread centered around trauma, motherhood and the terrifying consequences of confronting forces beyond human understanding.

Barrera will play a young woman attempting to rebuild her life after a traumatic event by moving into a rundown apartment complex. But what begins as a search for a fresh start spirals into paranoia and terror as she becomes surrounded by violent neighbors, unsettling stalkers and increasingly disturbing supernatural phenomena.

As reality fractures around her, she begins to suspect she is being targeted by a malevolent force tied directly to the darkest parts of herself.

Alleca cited classics including Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist and Get Out as key inspirations for the project. “True horror means forcing the audience to confront a universal existential fear no one’s ever dared to tell a story about before,” Alleca said. “I’ve found such a fear in Inhabit.”

The film is being produced by Ric Roman Waugh, Brendan Boyea and Kenner Bolt for Cinemachine, the company behind projects including Greenland and Shelter.

Boyea praised Barrera’s casting, calling her presence central to the film’s emotional and psychological impact. “Paired with Melissa’s powerful presence, we see this as a film that will resonate on both a visceral and human level,” he said.

Inhabit marks Barrera’s first major studio horror project since her highly publicized exit from Scream 7 in 2023 following controversy surrounding social media posts related to the war in Gaza.

In previous interviews, Barrera admitted the fallout triggered a personal and professional identity crisis. “When all of a sudden I found myself in a position where potentially everything could be taken from me, and I would never work again, I had an identity crisis,” she told Variety.

But the actress also described emerging from the experience with renewed confidence and a new perspective on her future beyond any one franchise.

And honestly, horror feels like a smart lane for her right now. Barrera has always brought emotional vulnerability to genre material, and Inhabit sounds like the kind of elevated psychological horror project that could fully capitalize on that strength.
