McDonald’s is teaming up with Indian-American fashion designer and McDonald’s superfan Megha Rao to celebrate Diwali like never before.
Diwali is known as the festival of lights, representing the symbolic victory of light over darkness. Families and friends all over the world celebrate by making rangolis or kolam, offering prayers, lighting diyas and participating in other rituals.

Now, The Golden Arches is surprising fans with a first-ever Diwali drive-thru experience at select restaurants across the country. Created by IW Group, the program aims to not only celebrate the holiday with the Indian-American community, but also educate others about its cultural traditions.
Teaming with Indian-American designer and brand fan, Megha Rao, McDonald’s will bring her custom rangoli designs exclusively to the local drive-thru experiences. Through her fashion line holiCHIC, Megha explores and redefines traditional South Asian clothing designs, making her the perfect partner to celebrate Diwali with the Golden Arches.
McDonald’s Diwali Drive-Thru Experience
During the five-day holiday period, McDonald’s will surprise and delight customers at select restaurants in Chicago, Dallas and Northern Virginia with a colorful drive-thru experience decorated with traditional rangoli artwork from Saturday, October 22 to Wednesday, October 26 in select markets. “Diwali, the vibrant festival of ‘love & light’ is often celebrated with family and friends. I would look forward to spending this holiday with my family and dressing up in festive attire. With this at the foundation, this heart-shaped rangoli illustration is a playful representation of love for family, my mother, and Diwali,” Rao shared with Reel 360 News.
An AR Experience
For fans who are unable to witness the in-person celebrations, McDonald’s is creating a Diwali AR lens on Snapchat and Instagram. The filter will simulate a virtual tunnel of lights with vivid rangoli artwork that can be shared with friends and family.
Rao adds, “Within the designs, I’ve worked with color palettes that carry significance & value in Indian culture and core values I learned from my mom. Such as the usage of red, symbolizing spark, excitement and love. Or saffron, representing courage and wisdom.”
