Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts is in final negotiations to join the cast of DC Studios’ upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

If the deal closes, Schoenaerts will play the film’s main antagonist opposite Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon), who stars as the eponymous hero, Kara Zor-El. While the exact role Schoenaerts will take on hasn’t been revealed, fans speculate he could be portraying Krem of the Yellow Hills, a character from the comics who plays a significant part in Supergirl’s storyline after committing a murder that propels her on a journey of vengeance and justice.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is slated for release on June 26, 2026. James Gunn, co-chairman of DC Studios, has hinted that the film will present a more “hardcore” version of Supergirl than previous iterations. He described the stark contrast between Superman, raised on Earth with loving parents, and Supergirl, who grew up on a fragmented piece of Krypton and witnessed immense tragedy before arriving on Earth.

The screenplay, written by Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries), is based on the comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The movie will be the second project in Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe, following Superman, which is scheduled for a 2025 release with David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Schoenaerts is known for his versatile roles in films like Rust and Bone, Red Sparrow, and The Old Guard. He most recently appeared alongside Kate Winslet in HBO’s mini-series The Regime. This new role as a DC villain marks another major addition to his impressive filmography.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is scheduled to begin filming in early 2025.
