Disney CEO Bob Iger has officially announced plans to revamp Marvel Studios’ production strategy, opting for a quality-centric approach over the previous high-volume output. Amidst recent underperformances and mixed reviews for films like Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels, Disney is reevaluating its approach to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
During Disney’s fiscal Q2 earnings call, Iger outlined the studio’s new direction, revealing that Marvel’s annual output will be significantly reduced. Moving forward, Marvel Studios will aim to release no more than 2-3 movies and 2 TV shows per year, down from the previous higher volume.
Iger emphasized the importance of prioritizing quality over quantity, stating, “We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four, and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two or at the maximum three.”
He expressed confidence in the studio’s upcoming slate, highlighting the excitement surrounding future Avengers projects. Additionally, Iger assured fans that despite the reduction in output, Marvel will maintain a balance between sequels and original content.

As for the immediate future, the MCU’s upcoming lineup includes Deadpool and Wolverine in 2024, followed by Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and Blade in 2025. Neew Avengers films are slated for 2026 and 2027. However, potential adjustments to release schedules may occur as the studio implements these changes.
Marvel on TV
On the small screen, Marvel Studios is gearing up to deliver a diverse array of content, including highly anticipated animated and live-action series set to premiere on Disney+ in the near future.
Among the animated offerings is Eyes of Wakanda, promising to explore the rich mythology and culture of the technologically advanced nation of Wakanda. This series is poised to delve into untold stories and captivating adventures within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Similarly, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man aims to bring everyone’s favorite web-slinger to the forefront in an animated series that promises thrilling action and heartfelt storytelling. Fans can expect to see Spider-Man swing into action as he battles villains and navigates the complexities of being a hero.
With the overwhelmingly positive response to the animated X-Men ’97, it’s probably safe to assume that there will be a season two.
On the live-action front, Agatha emerges as a highly anticipated spin-off from the acclaimed series WandaVision. Centered around the enigmatic character Agatha Harkness, this series promises to delve into her mysterious past and explore the darker corners of the MCU, offering fans a compelling new perspective on familiar events.
Additionally, Marvel fans can look forward to the live-action series Daredevil: Born Again, which is poised to bring the beloved vigilante back into the spotlight with gripping storytelling and intense action. As one of Marvel’s most iconic characters, Daredevil’s return is sure to be met with excitement and anticipation from fans.
Furthermore, Ironheart presents another exciting addition to the MCU, introducing audiences to the brilliant inventor Riri Williams as she takes on the mantle of Ironheart. With cutting-edge technology and a determination to make a difference, Riri’s journey promises to be both thrilling and inspiring.
While this strategic shift may disappoint some fans accustomed to frequent MCU releases, Iger’s announcement signals a renewed commitment to delivering high-quality content and ensuring the long-term success of the Marvel franchise.
As the MCU enters its next phase, Disney’s decision to streamline production may pave the way for fresh storytelling opportunities and innovative projects.
