Mario holds strong with rare box office three-peat

Mario

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues to dominate the box office, pulling off a rare three-peat with another $35 million weekend and holding the top spot for the third straight frame.

That kind of consistency is increasingly rare. Only two films managed the same feat last year, making Mario’s run one of the early defining stories of 2026.

The film now sits at $355.2 million domestically and $747.5 million globally after 19 days, keeping theaters busy as the industry inches toward the summer season. While Mario trails the pace of the 2023 original, it is slightly outperforming 2025’s A Minecraft Movie, a key benchmark given that film’s role as last year’s top performer.

More importantly, it is already profitable, delivering a strong return relative to its $110 million production budget and reinforcing the franchise’s long-term strength.

Beyond Mario, the overall weekend told a different story.

Total box office reached $90.6 million, down significantly from the same weekend last year, which was boosted by major openings and the Easter holiday frame. The slowdown was expected. Unlike 2025, which saw breakout titles hit early in the calendar, 2026 has yet to deliver a comparable wave of new releases to sustain momentum.

Still, the bigger picture remains positive.

Over the past four weeks, the 2026 box office is up 21 percent year over year, with attendance also rising, signaling that demand remains strong even during a softer stretch.

Holding in second place, Project Hail Mary continues its impressive run, adding $20.5 million in its fifth weekend. The film has now crossed $573 million globally, firmly establishing itself as a major win for Amazon MGM Studios and a rare example of a streaming-first company finding success in theatrical distribution.

In third, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy debuted with $13.5 million domestically, taking a darker, horror-driven approach to the franchise. While critics were mixed, audience response has been stronger, and the film’s modest $23 million budget puts it on a clear path to profitability.

Further down the chart, The Drama continues to perform steadily, while You, Me & Tuscany shows signs of the ongoing struggle for romantic comedies at the box office, with a sharp second weekend drop highlighting the genre’s current challenges.

Looking ahead, the industry is betting on a rebound. Upcoming releases like Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2 are expected to inject new energy into the market and push weekend box office ahead of last year’s comps.

And if CinemaCon was any indication, help is on the way.

With filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and Christopher Nolan alongside stars including Tom Cruise, Zendaya, and Robert Downey Jr. taking the stage, studios made one thing clear. The pipeline is loaded, and the big screen remains the priority.

The goal now is ambitious but within reach.

Break the $9 billion ceiling for the first time since 2019.
