More than four decades after one of the most notorious performances in MTV history, Madonna returned to the VMAs with a very different ending.
The 68-year-old pop icon won Artist of the Year at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, beating a field that included Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Morgan Wallen and Sabrina Carpenter.
During her acceptance speech, Madonna looked back to the inaugural VMAs in 1984, when she performed Like a Virgin in a now-famous wedding-dress performance that included an unscripted stumble and far more exposure than was typical for television at the time.
“In those days, butt cheeks were not hanging out,” she joked, before recalling what happened once she got backstage. “I went backstage feeling really proud of myself, and my manager told me that my career was over.”
Needless to say, the prediction did not age particularly well.
Madonna used the moment to connect that early experience to the past year and a half of her career, saying she had spent the time “finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music I wanted to make.” She encouraged the audience to do the same, whether for the next year, the next decade or the rest of their lives.
The award capped a huge night for Madonna, who entered the ceremony with a leading 13 nominations. She also won Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for Bring Your Love, along with Best Album for Confessions II, Best Dance and Best Long Form Video for Confessions II — The Film.
Madonna also opened the show with a performance of Bring Your Love and Danceteria, marking her first VMA performance in 23 years. The number featured appearances from Carpenter, Charli XCX, Sombr, Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Andrew Watt and Fab Five Freddy.

Her collaboration win with Carpenter also came with a very Madonna story.
Madonna said she initially waited several days for Carpenter’s team to respond before bypassing the usual channels and sending the singer a direct message herself. Carpenter answered, and the two were in the studio together within weeks.
“I love working with you because you are so professional,” Madonna told her.
Carpenter, laughing, quickly defended her team and said they do, in fact, respond — she just responds faster.
For Madonna, though, the Artist of the Year win carried the strongest symmetry of the night. She first walked onto a VMA stage in 1984 and was told afterward that she might have wrecked her career.
Forty-two years later, she walked off with one of the night’s biggest awards.
