After years of delays, director changes and script rewrites, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has officially acknowledged what many fans suspected: the long-awaited Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali is no longer moving forward.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige spoke candidly about the project’s collapse, admitting the unfinished film remains one of his biggest disappointments.
“I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala,” Feige said.
Marvel first announced the reboot at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, with Ali set to inherit the role made famous by Wesley Snipes. But the project struggled through years of creative turnover. Original director Bassam Tariq exited just months before production was scheduled to begin in 2022, followed by successor Yann Demange, who also departed during development.

According to Feige, Marvel ultimately decided the project never reached the level of quality the studio expected. “We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires,” Feige said. “It had to be unique.”
He explained that Blade became caught in the period when Marvel reassessed its creative output following its rapid expansion into Disney+ programming. “It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, ‘Only accept insanely great,'” Feige said. “It wasn’t ‘insanely great’ at the time.”
Rather than move into production with a script the studio wasn’t confident in, Marvel chose to stop development. “We didn’t feel like we often do, you can have a good script and make it a great script through production,” Feige said. “We didn’t feel confident that we could do that on Blade, and we didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us.”
Actress Mia Goth, who had been cast as the villain Lilith, previously revealed that the production had progressed through chemistry reads, costume fittings and makeup tests before ultimately unraveling.
“I was very excited about the direction it was going,” Goth said on the same podcast. “And Mahershala had such an interesting take on it… and then it just unraveled from there, unfortunately.”
Although Blade appears to have been shelved, Feige’s comments leave open the possibility that Marvel could revisit the character in the future if it finds the right creative approach.
