Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis talk Prince and The Time

Tonight, CBS will air an all-star tribute to the life and legacy of seven-time Grammy winner Prince. The iconic musician died four years ago today after an accidental fentanyl overdose at his Paisley Park home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. Before they became legendary producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were members of Prince’s first spin-off group, The Time.

The funk and rock band, whose hits include Jungle Love, The Bird, Cool, 777-9311, Wild and Loose, Gigilos Get Lonely Too and Fishnet consisted of Morris Day, Jesse Johnson, Monte Moir, Jellybean Johnson, Jam and Lewis. Tonight, they will reunite (their first since the release of The Original 7ven album since 2011) together on stage to pay tribute to Prince Rogers Nelson.

In a new video, the  five-time Grammy-winning production duo revealed one of Prince’s favorite songs and how they plan to honor him at the tribute special.

“Well for the medley we thought, ‘We’ve gotta give people what they want,'” said Jimmy Jam backstage during the filming, teasing some of the songs they choose, including one of Prince’s favorite songs of The Time’s from back in the day, “Cool. Watch the video below:

As a production duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis have won five GRAMMY Awards and worked with some of the biggest names in music. But on this special evening, it’s all about Prince, and the gravity of the gathering was not lost on the two music legends in their own right. 

“It’s totally emotional to be here tonight anyway, not just with our group, but with The Revolution…with Sheila E.,” said Lewis. “It’s just an awesome feeling to get us all in the buiilding, in same room, on the same stage.”  

Catch their special performance, plus many more, as part of Let’s Go Crazy: The GRAMMY Salute To Prince. airing on Tuesday, April 21, the four-year anniversary of Prince’s death, from 9–11PM ET/PT on CBS and streaming on CBS All Access.
