In a recent Variety cover story, Jennifer Lopez disclosed a heartfelt apology she received from Ayo Edebiri, the Emmy-winning co-star of The Bear, before their joint appearance on Saturday Night Live earlier this month. The apology came in light of resurfaced comments made by Edebiri on the Scam Goddess podcast in 2020, wherein she criticized Lopez’s career.

The podcast episode gained traction on social media just before their collaborative SNL episode, where Edebiri hosted and Lopez served as the musical guest to promote her upcoming album, This Is Me…Now. During the podcast conversation, Edebiri responded critically to host Laci Mosley’s assertion that Lopez’s career was akin to a scam.

In response to Mosley’s remarks, Edebiri commented, “Well, that’s the thing — she thinks she’s on multiple tracks, but it’s not her. I think she thinks that she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs…A lot of the write-ups of the songs will be like, ‘J.Lo didn’t have time to make it to the studio.’ Like, ‘J.Lo was busy.’ Doing what? Not singing, obviously.”

Lopez, however, revealed to Variety that Edebiri approached her with tears in her eyes to apologize in person in the Saturday Night Live dressing room. Lopez described Edebiri as “mortified and very sweet” during the apology, emphasizing how deeply remorseful she was for her previous comments. Despite the apology, Lopez noted that similar criticisms throughout her career hadn’t significantly affected her.

During the SNL episode, Edebiri indirectly addressed the controversy in a sketch where she highlighted the importance of thoughtfulness in online comments and their impact on others. Watch below:

The reconciliation between Jennifer Lopez and Ayo Edebiri demonstrates a mature and professional approach to addressing public criticism, paving the way for a positive collaboration between the two on the renowned comedy show.
