James Gunn to write new Superman film

Gunn

(NOTE: This article was previously published, but was lost during the Reel 360 shutdown). It’s official! the current co-chair and co-CEO of DC studios, James Gunn is writing a new Superman film! Gunn took to twitter to share the news himself after attending a meeting with co-chair and co-CEO Peter Safran and Man of Steel star Henry Cavill,

“Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

Gunn then began to do a quick Q & A on twitter, answering fans’ questions and confirmed that he is writing the film and he has been for a while, but he and Safran have not decided who will direct.

Within that Q & A session, Gunn confirmed that he and Safran also met with Ben Affleck because he wants to direct and Gunn and Safran want him to direct, but they do not have a specific project in mind yet.

Cavill confirmed on Instagram that he was given the news that he would not be the Man of Steel in this particular film which said,

“I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.

For those who have been by my side through the years……we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

Back in October Cavill shared that he WAS going to be in another Superman movie and it was reported that there was even a script in the works! Unfortunately for Cavill and his fans, this was before it was announced that Gunn and Safran would be the co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC studios, so it was true at the time, but things change really quickly in this DCU WBD saga.

Gunn got all of our hopes up that we would be seeing another Cavill Superman movie when he confirmed in a Twitter post that Superman was a priority on a tribute he posted to Superman:

According to Variety, The script will focus on the character’s life as a cub reporter in the fictional city of Metropolis. Audiences will encounter him meeting key characters, like colleague Lois Lane, insiders told the publication. Additionally, Variety sources said the new Gunn project will not replace the previously announced J.J. Abrams-Ta-Nehisi Coates Superman concept (which is still in active development).

We expect to hear Gunn and Safran’s full plan for the DCU soon once they share it with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO, David Zaslav. It should be really exciting to hear after talks with Patty Jenkins regarding a Wonder Woman 3 have seemed to have not gone very well considering she allegedly stormed out of the meeting with Warner Bros. Film Group Co-Chairpersons and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy after they told her that they didn’t think the treatment she provided worked and decided not to move forward with the film in its current iteration.
