James Gunn kicks off production on Superman: Man of Tomorrow

Man of tomorrow

James Gunn is officially back in the director’s chair. The DC Studios co-head has begun production on Superman: Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to last year’s reboot that marked the start of a new era for the franchise.

Gunn confirmed the news with a set image that quickly sparked speculation. A chessboard, a Van Kull Prison badge labeled for inmate A. Luthor, and a bag of Ruffles chips were all visible, hinting at both the tone and story direction of the sequel.

The film continues the newly established DC Universe after the first installment pulled in more than $600 million worldwide, signaling a successful reset for the character and the studio.

David Corenswet returns as Superman, alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. This time, the story pushes the dynamic further, forcing the two into an uneasy alliance as they face a larger threat in Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.

The cast continues to expand, with Adria Arjona joining as Maxima, a character with deep comic ties as both adversary and love interest to Superman. Returning and supporting players include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

The project is part of a broader rollout from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, which are building a connected slate that includes Supergirl and Clayface in 2026, followed by The Batman Part II.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is currently slated for release on July 9, 2027, positioning it as a key chapter in Gunn’s long-term vision for DC.
