Netflix has released the official trailer for the Stranger Things 5 finale, marking the beginning of the end for one of the most influential series of the streaming era. Titled “The Rightside Up,” the eighth and final episode of the fifth season will debut simultaneously in theaters and on Netflix on December 31.
The rollout completes Netflix’s staggered release strategy for the final season. The first four episodes launched on Thanksgiving as Stranger Things 5: Volume 1, followed by Episodes 5 through 7 on Christmas Day as Volume 2. Now, the two-hour-and-five-minute finale arrives as both a global streaming event and the franchise’s first major theatrical release.
Episode 7 left the stakes at their highest yet. Max, played by Sadie Sink, regains consciousness and reveals Vecna’s endgame: merging the real world with a parallel dimension beyond the Upside Down known as the Abyss. The group forms a last-ditch plan to enter the Abyss, rescue the children Vecna has taken, and destroy it from within. The closing moments show Vecna, still disguised as Henry Creel, leading his brainwashed victims in a séance as they are pulled into the dark new realm. Watch below:
Created by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things premiered in 2016 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Seasons 2 and 3 followed in 2017 and 2019, with Season 4 split across two volumes in 2022. Beyond television, the franchise expanded with the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which debuted in London’s West End in 2023 and is now playing on Broadway.
In recent interviews, the Duffers have emphasized that the emotional core of the finale centers on Eleven and whether a true “happy ending” is even possible. While Vecna remains the supernatural threat, the creators stress that the military has always been an equally dangerous force in Eleven’s life. Even with Dr. Brenner gone, his role has simply been replaced, most recently by a new authority figure named Kay.
Thematically, the finale pits Mike’s hopeful worldview against Kali’s more cynical realism, forcing Eleven to confront whether a normal life is achievable after everything she has endured. It’s a question that has followed the character since Season 1 and now comes to a head.
The numbers underline the scale of the moment. Stranger Things recently surpassed 1.2 billion total views on Netflix, cementing its place as one of the streamer’s most-watched series ever. For the finale, Netflix is leaning into theatrical spectacle, with screenings scheduled in more than 500 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. Showtimes begin at 5 p.m. PT on New Year’s Eve, aligning with the episode’s streaming release.
According to Ross Duffer, more than 1.1 million fans RSVP’d for the theatrical experience, with approximately 3,500 showtimes across 620 theaters already sold out.
After nearly a decade, Stranger Things isn’t just ending. It’s taking a final victory lap, turning its goodbye into an event worthy of the big screen. Here we go.
