In the hours leading up to their deaths, multiple outlets report that Rob Reiner and his son, Nick Reiner, 32, attended a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien on the evening of December 13. According to NBC News and other entertainment outlets, witnesses described Nick Reiner as behaving erratically and making several guests uncomfortable.
Reports say he interrupted comedian Bill Hader during a private conversation, was told the discussion was not open, and then froze before staring and walking away. Additional accounts from Page Six and The Daily Beast claim Nick moved through the party asking guests their names and whether they were famous, and that a louder verbal argument later broke out between Nick and his parents. Authorities have not confirmed the details of any interactions at the party.
After leaving the gathering, celebrity news outlets, including TMZ, report that Nick Reiner checked into The Pierside hotel in Santa Monica around 4 a.m. Sunday, using a credit card. According to those reports, hotel staff later found blood in the shower and on the bedding after he failed to properly check out, prompting investigators to collect evidence. Law enforcement has not publicly confirmed those details.
By Sunday afternoon, Rob and Michele Singer Reiner were discovered dead at their Brentwood home by Romy. Later that evening, Los Angeles Police Department officers arrested Nick Reiner in the Exposition Park area near the University of Southern California. Surveillance footage obtained by local stations shows him inside a convenience store shortly before his arrest. Police said he surrendered without incident.
A statement released by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office claimed Nick knifed his parents at their home in the early hours of Sunday morning before fleeing the scene. It read: “In approximately the early morning hours of December 14, Reiner is accused of fatally stabbing Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, at their home in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood,” the statement reads. “Nick Reiner fled but was arrested hours later that evening in Exposition Park. If convicted as charged, Reiner faces death or life in state prison without the possibility of parole. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made at a later date.”
The statement added of the charges: “32-year-old Nick Reiner was charged today with murdering his parents, Hollywood luminary Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, over the weekend at the couple’s Brentwood home … Nick Reiner (dob 9/14/93) was charged in case 25CJCF08098 with two counts of murder with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife.
He is being held without bail and is expected to make his first court appearance once medically cleared. Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they will seek the death penalty.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive or detailed how investigators connected Nick Reiner to the crime, emphasizing that the case remains active and under investigation. Further developments, including an arraignment date and additional court proceedings, are expected as the legal process continues.
