For the third consecutive weekend, Inside Out 2 dominated the box office, adding $57.4 million in new ticket sales, a drop of only 45% from last weekend.

The overall box office climbed to $152.7 million, bolstered by new releases A Quiet Place: Day One and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. This marks the third weekend in a row that the 2024 box office outperformed the same weekend in 2023. Last year, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny led the box office with a $60.4 million opening, contributing to a total of $128.3 million.

Inside Out 2 has grossed $469.3 million in the U.S. and Canada and $957.8 million worldwide in its first 17 days, surpassing the $858.9 million total of the original Inside Out from 2015.

The sequel has now moved into fifth place for domestic earnings among animated films, surpassing Shrek 2‘s $444.8 million from 2004. It is poised to surpass Frozen 2‘s $477.4 million by mid-week. If it maintains its momentum, Inside Out 2 could surpass Incredibles 2 as the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Battle for the Highest Grossing Domestic Animated Film – All Time

Despite opening 16% lower than Incredibles 2, Inside Out 2 surged in its second weekend to take the lead and has maintained its position. However, with Despicable Me 4 introducing stiff competition next week, Inside Out 2‘s dominance will be tested. If it retains 50% of its audience each weekend for the next four weeks, it might surpass Incredibles 2‘s $608.6 million. Additionally, Harold and the Purple Crayon will target a similar audience when it opens on August 2nd.

Inside Out 2 has joined the ranks of animated films that have grossed over $1 billion worldwide, becoming only the tenth film to achieve this milestone. Frozen 2 remains the highest-grossing animated film of all time with $1.453 billion.

A Quiet Place: Day One Makes Noise

Paramount’s A Quiet Place: Day One debuted in second place with $53.0 million. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, this prequel shifts focus from the Abbott family to the early invasion in New York City by extraterrestrials.

Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou, the film has received an 84% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, though audience reception is slightly lower at 73%. The franchise continues to impress, with the third installment opening higher than its predecessors.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 took third place with an $11.0 million opening. This Western, a passion project by Kevin Costner, explores the American settlers’ experience during the Civil War era. Despite its ambitious scope and $100 million budget, the film received a lukewarm 40% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes but a more favorable 71% audience rating.

Bad Boys Ride or Die

Bad Boys Ride or Die secured fourth place with $10.3 million, bringing its domestic total to $165.3 million after 24 days, matching 99% of the domestic total of Bad Boys for Life at the same point.

Kalki 2898 AD

Kalki 2898 AD, an Indian Telugu-language film, opened in fifth place with $5.4 million over the weekend, totaling $11.0 million since its Thursday debut. With a production budget of $72 million, it is the most expensive Indian film ever made.
