Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon to direct Scream 7

(Melissa Barrera (“Sam Carpenter”), left, and Jenna Ortega (“Tara Carpenter”) stars in Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group’s “Scream VI.”)

According to TheWrap, the directorial team Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence, will be stepping down as directors of Scream 7. Christopher Landon, the horror veteran behind Happy Death Day and Freaky, will be taking over as the director for the next installment of the Scream franchise.

Radio Silence gained prominence in 2019 with the horror comedy film Ready or Not, starring Samara Weaving. Currently, they are working on an original horror film for Universal, headlined by Melissa Barrera, who was also the protagonist in Scream (the fifth film from 2022) and Scream VI released this year.

Scream VI and Scream V were both successful in terms of box office revenue and received positive reviews from fans and critics. The two films came more than a decade after Scream IV which was directed by the late horror legend Wes Craven and didn’t perform well commercially.

The first two Scream films, released in 1996 and 1997, were the first R-rated slasher movies to surpass $100 million at the domestic box office. The franchise has been known for its self-satirical approach to the slasher genre and inspired a wave of similar movies.

REELated:

As for the plot of Scream 7, details are scarce, but it will likely continue the legacy of the Ghostface killers and feature Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as protagonists.

Christopher Landon has experience writing and directing horror films, and he has also worked on the Paranormal Activity series. He will now be taking the helm for the next installment in the Scream franchise.
