‘Grinch’ steals B.O. from new entries

You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch. And apparently a rich one, too.

This weekend’s Box Office saw the lovable furry green Dr. Seuss creation win the crowded box office with an astounding $66m. The Universal and Illumination release beat out newcomers Overlord and The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Yet, holdovers such as Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born did manage to continue strong.

With its box office haul, The Grinch currently ranks as the third largest opening weekend for an animated title in November behind The Incredibles ($70.4m) and Frozen ($67.39m) according to Box Office Mojo.

The family film is predicted to play well during the upcoming holiday season as it received an “A-” Cinemascore, despite mixed to negative reviews. Its Rotten Tomato score stands at 71% and that is enough to probably make Mom and Dad shell out popcorn, water and corn-syrup based food money for the kids.

Comscore’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented in a statement, “Sony’s Venom opened to $111 million in China and in the process took back the top spot at the global box office as it becomes the studio’s biggest China opening of all-time and pushes the superhero mega-hit to a whopping global cume of $673.5 million. Meanwhile, Fox’s Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has another harmonious weekend as it now sets its sights on the $300 million mark worldwide.”
