From Strange to Lightyear, Disney’s CinemaCon rundown

Disney
(Disney’s 2022 – 2023 slate)

CinemaCon 2022 ran from April 25-28, and has been occurring annually since 2021. Caesars Palace is the home of CinemaCon this year where studios such as Sony Pictures, Neon, Warner Brothers, Disney, Universal, Focus, Paramount, and Lions Gate shared what we can expect to see in theaters over the next few years.

Disney brought us up to speed regarding their upcoming projects. Now that things are “getting back to normal” in theaters, and movie fans are becoming more and more comfortable going back out into theaters, the studio has been hard at work to bring us entertaining content in order to get our butts back into those seats.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Attendees were treated to a full 20 minutes of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness during Disney’s 90 minute presentation. Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi and features the return of Dr. Steven Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), aka Scarlet Witch, who are dealing with the ramifications of the sorcerer’s tampering with the fabric of reality in Spider-Man-No Way Home.

The film will also see the return of Wong (Benedict Wong) and Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). We’re also getting to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez).

The footage shared was a nightmare Strange was experiencing where he was forced to kill the new character Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) in order to prevent the monster they are fighting from taking her power.

He then wakes up and gets dressed up in a suit and goes to a wedding. He’s not going to his own wedding, he’s going to his ex’s wedding. Clearly the two have ended things on good terms, otherwise he wouldn’t be in attendance and the two share a moment of closure after the wedding at the reception. After speaking with the bride we all remember as Christine (Rachel McAdams), Strange had to leave the wedding to battle a tentacled one-eyed creature we have already seen in the trailers aka Gargantos who is wreaking havoc in the city streets.

Just when it seems Strange will fail against Gargantos, the current Sorcerer Supreme, Wong, comes in and saves the day with his magic whip. All of this transpires in front of Christine’s wedding party who were watching from the vantage point of a balcony.

Chavez is also involved in the epic battle sequence and she reveals that there are creatures combing the multiverse, hunting her, so they can steal her powers and she divulges that she can travel the multiverse herself, but only when she’s really afraid.

Strange tells Chavez about his dream and she tells him that it’s not a dream and that it really happened. They discover that they need to get The Book of Vishaniti, which is in another universe. Wong and Strange deduce that the need magic instead of sorcery and he seeks out Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Before Strange meets up with Wanda, we are shown her own dreams where she lives a happy life in the house from Wandavision with her twin boys.

Strange catches up with her outside and the scene we’ve already seen in the trailers occurs, where she tells Strange she’s been expecting him after the events that transpired in Westview and he assures her that he’s not there to discuss that and he asks her what she knows about the multiverse.

The footage then quickly becomes a montage of the rest of the movie in flashes of what viewers can expect to see on May 6th.

The official synopsis reads, “In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.”
