When I met writer/director Daniel Kwan at the 2023 Writers Guild Awards, I told him while he was clutching his trophy for Everywhere, Everything All at Once, that he was going to win an Oscar the following Sunday.
Daniel, humbled by all of the Awards Season’s accolades, smiled back and said, “Don’t jinx it.” Apparently, I didn’t as The Daniel’s, as he and partner Daniel Scheinert are affectionately known, won three gold statuettes last night during the 95th Academy Awards.
“We want to dedicate this to the mommies. All the mommies in the world,” Daniel Scheinert said onstage, while Daniel Kwan dedicated the Oscar to “my immigrant parents — my father who fell in love with movies because he needed to escape the world and, thus, passed that love of movies onto me. [And] my mother, who is a creative soul, who wanted to be a dancer, actor, and singer, but could not afford the luxury of that life path, and then, gave it to me.”
Everything Everywhere All at Once took home seven Oscars in total; also for Best Directing, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. Meanwhile, All Quiet on the Western Front won Best International Feature Film for Germany among four total wins.
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the multiversal heroes from Everything Everywhere All at Once — the year’s most nominated film — gathered together at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood with Na’vi aliens, estranged Irish mates, First World War soldiers, a new class of Top Gun graduates, Lydia Tár and the King of Rock and Roll, and more for the 95th Oscars.
