Emma Stone is brought back to life in first trailer for Poor Things

Searchlight Pictures shared a new trailer for Poor Things. From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos comes a Frankenstein-esque tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).

Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents.

In the surreal trailer, Baxter promises Ramy Youssef that this story is “a happy tale.” In the teaser, we get quick clips of surreal settings, including a castle, a ship, and a garden full of strange hybrid creatures. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. Watch below:

REELated:

The film is based on the 1992 novel of the same name, a sort of postmodern Frankenstein that combines hilarious comedy and political satire to tell the story of Bella, a drowned woman whose body is resuscitated by Dr. Godwin Baxter, Dafoe’s character.

From a screenplay by Tony McNamara, Poor Things is produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Lanthimos, and Stone. Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott, and Suzy Bemba, all in attire that would be at home in a Wes Anderson film, round out the cast.

Poor Things is expected to premiere this year at the Venice Film Festival, which will take place in August, and will open in theaters on Friday, September 8.
