Eddie Murphy honored with AFI Life Achievement Award

Eddie Murphy took center stage in Hollywood as the American Film Institute presented him with its 51st Life Achievement Award, celebrating a career that has shaped comedy, film, and culture for decades.

Held at the Dolby Theatre, the gala brought together a powerhouse lineup of talent, including Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock, Spike Lee, Jennifer Hudson, Eva Longoria, and Stevie Wonder, among many others, all there to honor Murphy’s legacy.

The evening was packed with tributes, stories, and performances, including a standout musical moment from Jennifer Hudson backed by a house band led by Rickey Minor. Throughout the night, collaborators and peers reflected on Murphy’s influence, from his early stand-up dominance to his defining roles on screen.

Presenting the award, Spike Lee connected Murphy’s impact to something bigger than entertainment. “Eddie and I have Brooklyn in our blood. However, Eddie and I took different paths. Eddie made us laugh and made our nation feel better. I took a camera and told stories about how our nation could be better. We both push culture forward. We’re still not even done,” Lee said.

Murphy accepted the honor to a standing ovation, taking a moment to reflect on the people who shaped his journey. “Looking out and seeing all my family, all my kids and my beautiful wife. Seeing all the different people that I worked with. This is a special moment. I’d like to thank everybody for this night that I will remember forever and ever,” he said.

The tribute, which raised more than $2.5 million for AFI’s nonprofit education programs, will reach a wider audience when it premieres on Netflix on May 31.

For one night, Hollywood didn’t just celebrate a career.

It celebrated a legacy that’s still going.
