Dungeons & Dragons take #1 spot at Box Office

Dungeons
(Michelle Rodriguez, Chris Pine)

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves grossed $38.5 million in its debut weekend, earning the film the #1 spot on the top ten list, knocking John Wick: Chapter 4 right out of the top spot.

Paramount Pictures and Entertainment One’s fantasy action picture is based on the most successful role-playing game of all time, and in this story, a charismatic thief joins up with an unlikely band of co-conspirators on a quest to find a lost relic but, of course, events don’t unfold as planned. It stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant and has been very well received by critics who have given it a 91% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Many critics agree that the humor throughout the movie as a key to making it more fun to watch than recent superhero features like Black Panther which had more of a somber tone. Movie fans have also been positive, giving the film a 93% audience score.    .

John Wick: Chapter 4 has suffered the same fate as almost all the films this year: it couldn’t hold onto the top spot for more than one week. With a disappointing drop of 62% from last weekend’s opening and a weekend gross of $28.2 million. This is the biggest two-week drop for any John Wick film. John Wick dropped 47% and John Wick: Chapter 2 dropped 57%. WIth each film in the franchise earning more during its opening weekend, the two-week drop also increased with each film released.

Paramount’s horror hit Scream IV finished tied for third place with a total of $5.3 million and a drop of 36% from last weekend. Scream IV’s third-place tie was shared with the new faith-based film His Only Son, from Angel Studio which came in just under $5.3 million from only 1,920 theaters.

According to the website, “His Only Son recounts one of the most controversial moments in the Old Testament—when Abraham was commanded by God to sacrifice his son Isaac on the mountain of Moriah. While traveling to the place of the sacrifice, alongside Isaac and two servants, Abraham is flooded with vivid memories from the years he and Sarah spent longing for the son they were promised—the son he must now lay upon the altar.” The micro-budget film had a production budget of $225,000 with a crowdsourced marketing campaign to boost its showing at 1,920 theaters. The film has already become remarkably profitable during its premiere weekend.

MGM’s Creed III followed in 5th place with $5 million for a domestic total of $148.6 million for its five weeks in theaters. Warner Bros. Discovery’s Shazam!: Fury of the Gods continues its dramatic slide down the top ten list. After dropping an additional 48%, the film now holds the #6 spot on the list.

Another new release film in the box office top 10 list is Sundance Grand Prize winner and the debut feature of A.V. Rockwell, A Thousand and One from Focus. This specialized release about a mother removing her son from foster care opened in 936 theaters to $1.8 million and debuted on the top ten list at #7.

Sony’s 65 has suffered a dramatic drop of 51% in its fifth week in theaters, only bringing in $1.6 million and taking the #8 spot, dropping 3 places from last week’s #5. Disney’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s time on the top ten list seems to quickly be coming to an end. The blockbuster from 7 weeks ago is currently #9 earning just $1.2 in theaters.

Lionsgate’s Jesus Revolution has slipped down to the #10 spot on the list after 6 weeks at the box office, however between Jesus Revolution and His Only Son, it’s pretty remarkable to see two faith based films breaking into the box office top ten list.
