Labor Day weekend saw the continued dominance of Deadpool & Wolverine at the box office, as the superhero blockbuster brought in an additional $15.2 million, marking a mere 17% drop from the previous weekend.
This marks the fifth time in six weeks that the duo has led the box office, a remarkable feat in a competitive summer season. The movie’s success also contributed to the ongoing trend of R-rated films topping the charts, with this being the sixth consecutive weekend an R-rated title has led the box office.
The total box office revenue for the weekend was $81.1 million, slightly down from last year’s $89.2 million, which was led by the debut of The Equalizer 3. The late summer surge in box office performance has cooled slightly, with the 2024 box office falling just behind the pace set in 2023.
However, momentum is expected to pick up with the much-anticipated release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice next weekend. The sequel to the 1988 classic premiered to positive reviews at the Venice Film Festival and is expected to be one of the top earners in the remaining release schedule of the year.
As of now, Deadpool & Wolverine has accumulated an impressive $599.5 million domestically and $1.246 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing film of the year. The movie’s success is part of a broader trend of record-breaking performances in 2024, which also includes Pixar’s Inside Out 2 becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
REELated:
Like a facehugger gripping its prey’s face, Alien: Romulus continued to hold onto second place, earning $9.3 million over the weekend, a 43% drop from the previous weekend. With 17-day totals of $88.8 million domestically and $254.4 million worldwide, the film is performing well within the franchise, although it is unlikely to surpass Prometheus in global earnings.
In third place, Sony’s romantic drama It Ends With Us brought in $7.425 million, continuing to exceed expectations with a 24-day domestic gross of $133.7 million. The film is now the highest-grossing original film of 2024, a significant achievement given its modest expectations before release.
ShowBiz Direct’s biopic Reagan finished fourth with $7.4 million, despite mixed reviews. The film, which depicts the life of the 40th U.S. President, has resonated with audiences, particularly those supportive of Reagan’s political legacy.
Rounding out the top five was Twisters, which earned $7.2 million, maintaining its popularity nearly seven weeks after its release. The film has now grossed $258.0 million domestically and $358.8 million worldwide, demonstrating its enduring appeal amid a quieter box office landscape.
As Hollywood looks ahead, all eyes are on the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which is expected to reignite box office enthusiasm as we head into the fall season.
