DC Studios has officially launched production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in the UK, marking the next major chapter in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella), the film stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon, Upright) as Kara Zor-El, the Girl of Steel. This project is one of the most anticipated additions to the new DCU, based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s acclaimed comic series.
In a first-look image shared by Gunn, Supergirl sits in a bar wearing a hoodie emblazoned with the iconic “S” symbol—a stark departure from her traditional superhero costume. The production has sparked excitement and curiosity, as fans anticipate a more grounded, character-driven portrayal of Supergirl.
Gunn, in his social media announcement, highlighted the film’s unique take on Kara’s origin. “This is not the Supergirl we’re used to,” Gunn wrote. “Kara grew up on a fragment of Krypton, witnessing death and destruction around her for the first 14 years of her life. Her journey is far darker and more hardcore than that of her cousin, Superman.”
This approach reflects the creative team’s goal to explore the stark contrasts between Superman’s upbringing on Earth with loving parents and Kara’s harsher, more tragic backstory. The film is expected to dive deep into Kara’s psyche, exploring themes of resilience, survival, and identity.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow boasts a star-studded ensemble, including:
- Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young woman who accompanies Kara on her intergalactic journey.
- Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, a villain central to the narrative.
- Jason Momoa as Lobo, the fan-favorite bounty hunter.
- David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Kara’s father.
- Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, Kara’s mother.
The creative team includes cinematographer Eli Born (The Boogeyman, Hellraiser), production designer Scott Kuzio (Fear Street trilogy), and editors Brett W. Bachman (Pig) and Josh Ethier (Don’t Move).
The film follows Supergirl as she embarks on a journey across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she forms a bond with Ruthye and becomes entangled in a quest for justice and revenge. This interstellar odyssey promises a mix of high-stakes action and poignant character moments, reflecting the emotional depth of the source material.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is slated to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. As cameras roll, anticipation continues to build for this bold reimagining of a beloved hero.
