David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan cast in Superman: Legacy

Life is sweet for David Corenswet. DCU Creative Chief James Gunn has cast Corenswet and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane, respectively, in the upcoming film Superman: Legacy.

The film is set to launch DC’s new universe under Gunn and co-DC Studios boss Peter Safran.

Superman is a highly coveted role, and only three actors have portrayed the character on the big screen. Christopher Reeves’ iconic (and hard to follow) performance in 1978’s Superman, while Brandon Routh appeared in 2006’s Superman Returns, and Henry Cavill took on the role in 2013’s Man of Steel and subsequent films in the DCEU. Gunn announced the news in a tweet:

Corenswet, known for his roles in Ryan Murphy’s series The Politician and Netflix’s Hollywood as well as the horror film, Pearl, will have the significant responsibility of portraying Superman in this new iteration. Brosnahan, acclaimed for her work will bring Lois Lane to life.

Superman: Legacy is expected to be the cornerstone of Gunn and Safran’s new DC universe. The film is set to be released on July 11, 2025, and is considered a pivotal project for the future of DC films under their direction.

After a significant collection of critical and/or financial flops including 2011’s Green Lantern, Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad, Justice League (Joss Whedon), Shazam: Fury of the Gods, Birds of Prey, Black Adam and The Flash, the brand is severely damaged, and in dire need of fresh voices. Hopefully, Gunn, who successfully directed three Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel and The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros, will be that voice.

REELated:

Gunn has expressed a personal connection to the character of Superman, relating to his sense of being an outsider. The film aims to reimagine and revitalize the beloved superhero for a new generation. Currently, the best interpretation of the character can be found on the CW’s Superman & Lois which was just renewed for a fourth and probably final season.

Runners-up for the roles included Nicholas Hoult, Tom Brittney, Phoebe Dynevor and Emma Mackey. Aside from Superman: Legacy, Corenswet is also set to appear in the Apple series Lady in the Lake and a sequel to the film Twister.

Up, up and away!
