“Unions bring us community, and they give us power,” Jane Fonda declared as she accepted the 60th SAG Life Achievement Award, setting the tone for an evening dedicated to resilience, artistry, and advocacy.
Held once again at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and streamed live worldwide on Netflix, the 31st SAG Awards celebrated the dedication of performers while acknowledging the devastating L.A. wildfires that left many in Southern California displaced.
The ceremony honored first responders, raised awareness for disaster relief efforts, and provided viewers with the opportunity to donate to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund.
A Night of Honors and Tributes
The evening began with the Official Pre-Show, hosted by award-winning entertainer and gender equality advocate Lilly Singh and actor-comedian Sasheer Zamata. In addition to interviewing nominees, they announced the winners of the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble awards: Fall Guy took home the honor for Motion Picture, while Shōgun won for Television Series.
During his opening remarks, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland took a moment to recognize the ongoing recovery efforts in Los Angeles. “Our city is rebuilding, and we owe so much to the first responders—the real angels on the front lines during this horrific wildfire season.” He also expressed gratitude to the broadcast journalists who kept the public informed, despite the personal risks they faced.
Big Winners of the Night
Timothée Chalamet earned the Actor for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for A Complete Unknown, while Demi Moore received Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for The Substance.
The historical drama Shōgun led the television categories, starting the night with five nominations and securing four wins. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won for Outstanding Male and Female Performances in a Drama Series, while the cast earned Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series.
In the comedy categories, Martin Short won Outstanding Male Actor in a Comedy Series for Only Murders in the Building, while Jean Smart secured her third SAG Award for Hacks. The cast of Only Murders in the Building also took home Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
The prestigious Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture went to Conclave, with an ensemble featuring Sergio Castellitto, Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, Isabella Rossellini, and Stanley Tucci.
Jane Fonda’s Impactful Speech
A highlight of the evening was Julia Louis-Dreyfus presenting the SAG Life Achievement Award to Jane Fonda. Known for her powerful advocacy and acting career, Fonda’s speech was met with a standing ovation. “Your enthusiasm makes this seem less like the twilight of my life and more like a ‘Go girl! Kick ass!’ Which is good because I’m not done!” Fonda declared, eliciting cheers. She spoke about the importance of community and empathy in challenging times, emphasizing, “What actors create is empathy. This is our documentary moment—this is not a rehearsal. Let’s be brave, let’s stay in community, and let’s help the vulnerable.”
Her long list of accolades includes two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, an Emmy, seven Golden Globes, the AFI Life Achievement Award, and numerous humanitarian recognitions, including the upcoming William O. Douglas Award for her commitment to social justice.
A Celebration of Performance
SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher also took the stage, thanking the unions that made the evening possible and urging action on climate change.
Kristen Bell returned as host for the second time, with a star-studded lineup of presenters, including Ariana Grande, Ayo Edebiri, Bowen Yang, Colin Farrell, Colman Domingo, Cynthia Erivo, David Duchovny, Elle Fanning, Fran Drescher, Gillian Anderson, Harrison Ford, Jamie Lee Curtis, Keke Palmer, Kerry Washington, Michelle Yeoh, Ralph Fiennes, Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, and Zooey Deschanel, among others.
