(Big winners at Producers Guild)

The stage is now set for A24’s Everything, Everywhere All at Once to win big at this year’s Academy Awards. The biggest prognosticator of winners, the Producers Guild of America, held their awards last night in Beverly Hills, where the fantasy sci-fi comedy won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

Actor-producer Tom Cruise, who Steven Spielberg told he may have single-handedly rescued movie theaters with Top Gun: Maverick,  was honored with the David O. Selznick Achievement Award, which recognizes a producer or producing team for their extraordinary body of work in motion pictures.

The 60-year-old star was presented the award by his longtime friend and former Paramount Pictures CEO Sherry Lansing. She recalled for the audience when Cruise pitched rebooting Mission: Impossible. Lansing described how she was surprised when she read the first draft of the script and all the agents died at the beginning of the movie.

After a 13-minute and 25-second sizzle reel, Cruise took the stage. He praised his love for Hollywood and thanked friends and colleagues including Mission: Impossible producer and director Christopher McQuarrie.

Mindy Kaling (Velma, The Mindy Project, Sex Life of College Girls) was presented the Norman Lear Achievement Award by her friend and co-star of The Office, B.J. Novak.

Keith Beauchamp accepted the Stanley Kramer Award on behalf of the producers of Till. He was introduced by star Danielle Deadwyler.

Other winners included CNN and Warner Bros’ documentary, Navalny, matching its BAFTA win, along with Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio taking home Best animated feature.

On the television awards side, HBO’s The White Lotus won the drama series category. FX’s freshman and Chicago-produced series The Bear took Best Comedy. FX’s The Dropout ended its awards season-came home with and ended its awards season run by winning limited series.

As stated earlier The Producers Guild Awards has been has been a bellwether for the Academy Award for Best Picture. According to Variety only three movies have won at the PGA and have not gone on to win the Academy Award for best picture since 2009. They are The Big Short (2015), La La Land (2016) and 1917 (2019).

The Academy Awards air on March 12 on ABC.
