Christina Applegate, known for her roles in Dead to Me, Married with Children, Samantha Who, Vacation and other projects, surprised the audience at the 75th Emmys when she appeared to present the award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series to Ayo Edebiri from The Bear.

Applegate, who had disclosed her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis in August 2021, received a warm welcome and standing ovation from the audience. Quite frankly, seeing her appear on stage, brought tears to many eyes.

In her self-deprecating acceptance speech, Applegate acknowledged the audience’s enthusiastic response, stating, “Oh my god, you’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up. It’s fine… Body not by Ozempic. Okay, let’s go.” She playfully added, “We don’t have to applaud every time I do something,” as the applause continued. Watch below:

Applegate, who battled MS while filming the final season of Dead to Me, shared her challenges in an interview with Variety last year. She described the experience as “hard as you would possibly think it would be,” often requiring the use of a wheelchair to get to the set. Watching the final season took her months as she struggled with seeing herself in a different physical state due to inactivity and medications.

Considering her future in the industry, Applegate expressed the possibility of pivoting to full-time voiceover roles to accommodate her health needs. She mentioned her current inability to envision early morning shoots and long hours on set, emphasizing the importance of ensuring her daughter is taken care of.

Applegate’s surprise appearance at the Emmys and her candid comments about navigating her career amid health challenges resonate with her openness about her MS journey and the impact it has on her professional decisions.

Reel 360 News wishes Christina all the best.
