Cannes Lions: Greenpeace invades WPP beach

No, it’s not 1944. And it definitely is not Normandy. But the beaches of France were stormed as costumed members of Greenpeace France gatecrashed a private event at WPP’s beach installation.

The incident comes on the heels of former Cannes winner turned Greenpeace activist, Gustav Martner, taking the stage during the opening ceremony on Monday and unfolding a banner that read “No awards on a dead planet, Ban Fossil Ads!

Wednesday according to The Drum, multiple protestors dressed as the popular ‘This is Fine’ dog meme, rowed to the beach in kayaks. Cannes Lions representatives along with police quickly shut it down. Watch the video below:

According to the article, Greenpeace is a client of WPP network agency, VMLY&R. The agency’s Brazil office just won two Gold Lions for its Greenpeace work on Tuesday. Watch the video below:

Silvia Pastorelli, a policy advisor in climate change and energy at Greenpeace, told The Drum that the protestors have “nothing against the creative sector, there is a lot of incredible energy and talent, but we would like to see that used as a force for good.”
