Anthony Head, the beloved British actor best known for his roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ted Lasso and Merlin, has died at the age of 72. Head passed away peacefully from complications related to pneumonia while surrounded by family, according to a statement released by his daughters, actresses Emily Head and Daisy Head.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father, Anthony Head,” the statement read. “He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family.”
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Head became one of Britain’s most recognizable performers, moving effortlessly between television, film, theater and comedy.
For generations of television viewers, however, he will forever be remembered as Rupert Giles, the bookish librarian, Watcher, and father figure to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Head appeared throughout the show’s seven-season run, helping anchor the supernatural drama with equal parts wisdom, humor, and emotional depth.
Before finding international fame on Buffy, Head was already a household name in the United Kingdom thanks to the wildly popular Nescafé Gold Blend commercials opposite Sharon Maughan. The romantic ad campaign became a cultural phenomenon throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.
His extensive résumé also included memorable roles as King Uther Pendragon in the BBC fantasy series Merlin, the British Prime Minister in Little Britain, and Rupert Mannion, the billionaire antagonist on Apple TV+’s Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso, a role that introduced him to a new generation of viewers.
Born in Camden Town, London, Head trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before launching a career that spanned stage and screen. He appeared in productions ranging from The Rocky Horror Show to films including The Iron Lady, Persuasion, and The Inbetweeners Movie.
Beyond acting, Head was known for his advocacy work for animal welfare and remained a respected figure in the British entertainment industry throughout his career.
He is survived by his daughters Emily and Daisy Head.
His family has requested privacy as they mourn his loss. “How lucky we are to know we are able to watch him doing what he loved, even when he is no longer with us,” his daughters said in their statement.
Rest in Power, Anthony.
