Franchise nears the $1B mark

Well, that was a short reign for Ant-Man and The Wasp. The third (fourth if you count Deadpool 2) only stayed atop the box office one week before being bitten in the neck by Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. Exceeding expectations, the animated film grossed $44.1 million domestically.

It has a Cinemascore of A- which bodes well for the film over future weekends. comScore announced the official worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of July 15, 2018.

More troubling, is the Dwayne Johnson disaster/action vehicle Skyscraper debuted with a disappointing $24 million – $25 million opening. While Jumanji was a huge hit, Baywatch proved that Johnson isn’t unbeatable at the box office. While the film is sitting at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, the Cinemascore is B+, which usually spells doom for a film at the box office. Our critic, Joia Davida, had tepid things to say about the film as well. However, Universal and Legacy can breathe slightly easier as the film grossed $65.9 million overseas.

Sitting pretty at number 2, Marvel’s Ant-Man and The Wasp hit the $100 million mark at the domestic box office on Thursday and is expected to earn $28 million – $30 million this weekend. Notably the film finished fourth in the global box office race, coming in behind Skyscraper and the Chinese film, Dying to Survive.
