The debut trailer for My Old Ass has been released, featuring Aubrey Plaza as she advises her younger self in this unique coming-of-age comedy. The film, which received glowing reviews at the Sundance Film Festival, is set in the summer before 18-year-old Elliot Labrant (played by Maisy Stella) heads to college in Toronto.

In the trailer, Plaza appears as the older version of Elliot while the younger Elliot is having a psychedelic experience in the woods. Initially, the teenage Elliot is skeptical, especially since they don’t look alike.

“You’re me? I don’t have a gap in my teeth,” Elliot remarks to her older self around a campfire. Plaza’s character quickly retorts, “Yeah, wear your retainer.”

The older Elliot advises her younger counterpart to be kinder to her mom and spend more time with her brothers. She also warns against falling for anyone named Chad. Predictably, Elliot soon meets the boy she was cautioned about, leading to a humorous journey of self-discovery before she leaves home.

“I’m actually kind of hot for middle age,” the younger Elliot muses. This prompts a defensive response from her elder self: “I’m 39 years old. That’s not middle-aged. I’m a very young adult.” Watch the trailer below:

Directed by Megan Park, the actress-turned-filmmaker behind The Fallout, My Old Ass reflects her desire to create a joyful, nostalgic film. At Sundance, Park shared her inspiration: “I kept thinking about how there was a time when you would play pretend with friends, and then suddenly you just stop. That realization made me emotional. I wanted to create something that reminded people of simpler, happier times because life can be tough.”

Amazon MGM acquired My Old Ass for $15 million in one of the largest deals at this year’s Sundance. The studio plans a limited theatrical release starting September 13, followed by a wider rollout. The film is produced by LuckyChap, the production company founded by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, alongside Scythia Films and Indian Paintbrush.
