‘Aquaman’ begins reign of the seven seas box office

The guy in the gold and green costume ain’t a joke anymore.

Two weeks before it premieres in the United States on December 21, James Wan’s Aquaman has gotten off to a huge start at the international box office taking in $93.6 million debut in its China debut.

The next entry in the DCEU now holds the record for the biggest opening ever for a DC Comics property in China and the biggest opening ever in China for Warner Bros. topping previous studio record-holder Ready Player One ($61.6M). It is also the fifth-biggest opening for a superhero film ever and the fourth largest opening for a U.S. film this year.

Wonder Woman who? Batman v Superman what?

The underwater adventure has already topped the entire lifetime gross of both Princess Diana ($90.4M) and Man of Steel ($63.4M) in China and should surpass both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($95.7M).

As for the domestic box office, Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet ($16M; $258.1M worldwide total), Universal’s The Grinch ($15M; $322.3M worldwide total), MGM’s Creed II ($10M; $119.6M worldwide total), Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($6.8M; $568.5M worldwide total), and 20th Century Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody ($6M; $596.5M worldwide total) made up the Top 5.
