Disney and 20th Century’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes dominated the box office with a strong three-day opening of $56.5M. This weekend’s total earnings for all films reached $94.4M, slightly below last year’s $100.8M, which featured Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The film marks the tenth installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise and the first released under Disney’s ownership following its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The original Planet of the Apes premiered in 1968, becoming a beloved classic and spawning nine sequels, including Tim Burton’s 2001 reboot.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes serves as the fifth installment in the reboot series, continuing the story 300 years after War for the Planet of the Apes. Directed by Wes Ball, the film stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy, receiving positive reviews from both critics and audiences.

With a production budget of $160M, the film aims to reach profitability with a projected worldwide box office target of $400M. Its opening of $56.5M ranks as the third highest among all Apes movies.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire continues its successful run, nearing all-time highs in domestic gross for the monster franchise. The film, which amassed its totals in March and April, benefits from the start of summer vacation, sustaining ticket sales as more schools let out.

In second place, The Fall Guy earned an additional $13.7M, bringing its total worldwide gross to $95.6M, though it still has a way to go to offset its $125M production budget.

Challengers and Tarot also maintained steady box office performances, while Godzilla vs. Kong remains a strong contender despite increased competition.
