Culture-driven production company Fela has expanded Amir Karimi’s role, naming him executive producer in addition to his head of production role. Karimi will continue to be based in the company’s Toronto office as Fela grows its footprint across North America.
Karimi began his career in music videos, working with artists including Drake and Miguel, before expanding into commercial production for global brands such as Facebook, Nike, and YouTube. Deeply influenced by culture and community, he has long championed diverse voices and creative ambition within Toronto’s evolving arts landscape.
Starting as a production assistant on music video sets, Karimi steadily rose through the ranks, working alongside collaborators who would later go on to form Fela in 2020. As one of the company’s first employees, he has played a key role in its growth, helping establish Fela as one of the most dynamic production houses in North America. His leadership has been central to building a model rooted in cultural fluency, creative excellence, and a strong binational presence in both Canada and the United States.
Among his recent credits, Karimi served as an executive producer on the Fela produced Oscar qualifying short film Motherland, directed by Jasmin Mozaffari. The film earned Best Canadian Short at the Toronto International Film Festival, Best Live Action Short Drama at the Canadian Screen Awards, Best Drama at Aspen Shortsfest, and Best Drama at HollyShorts.
Born in Tehran during a period of political upheaval, Karimi immigrated to Canada with his family at age 8. His Iranian heritage has remained a constant source of inspiration throughout his career, shaping his approach to storytelling and reinforcing his belief in production as a catalyst for change. That belief led him to film school and ultimately into a career focused on building meaningful and inclusive creative environments.
“My goal has always been to affect change on productions and create more inclusive spaces,” said Karimi. “At Fela, we believe in providing a safe environment, free from ego and fear, where people are treated with respect. We have become known for that, and I’m proud to play a role. We share a vision of what the advertising and film industry can look like, and we’ve built a powerhouse of creative storytelling. I love the people at Fela and the way we continue to keep focus on shaping culture.”
Founder and executive producer Taj Critchlow praised Karimi’s expanded role, saying, “Amir is someone directors, crew, and clients trust implicitly. He has played a central role in shaping how we operate. This role recognises both his impact to date and the leadership he brings as we look toward the future.”
