‘Fosters’ Barreto makes directing debut at Hollyshorts

Lady-hater

Alexandra Barreto, who played Ana Gutierrez on Freeform’s The Fosters, can now add director to her IMDB.

Her directorial debut, a comedic short film, Lady Hater, will screen at the 15th annual Oscar-Qualifyin HollyShorts Film Festival.

The short film premiered at 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and was called out by Forbes as “Five Not to be Missed Shorts from the Tribeca Film Festival.”

Lady Hater, about a woman who thinks she’s going to a yoga class, but instead gets stuck in an all-female goddess seminar, showcases a diverse group of women coming together to explore the idea of what it means to be a woman, and the ridiculous expectations that have been put upon them by society, but mostly by themselves. Alex wrote the feature version of the film partly in response to the 2016 Women’s March when she started exploring the idea of what it really meant to call herself a “guy’s girl.” She had to admit that by using that term, she was distancing herself from women out of her own insecurities. And that’s what she set out to explore in the film, using comedy as a unifying force.

This is not Alex’s first time behind the camera. She produced the critically acclaimed feature film, Too Late, starring Academy Award Nominees, John Hawkes and Robert Forster, as well as six short films.

She is currently seeking funding for the feature film version of Lady Hater, which she has written and plans to direct.

Audiences can catch the film on Friday, August 16th at 10pm. Schedule times and tickets can be found here.
