Marvel fans, were more than ready to dive back into the magical world of Westview with Agatha All Along, which premiered on Disney+ on September 18. This WandaVision spinoff brings back Kathryn Hahn back as the mischievous and oh-so-witchy Agatha Harkness, promising a journey that’s darker, more mysterious, and absolutely spellbinding.

The show kicks off with Agatha, still powerless after her WandaVision defeat, encountering a mysterious goth teen, played by Joe Locke. He helps Agatha break free from her spell and convinces her to guide him down “The Witches’ Road,” a magical adventure filled with trials that could help them get what they desire most. But there’s a catch—they need to form a coven first, which proves to be no easy feat for Agatha, a natural-born lone wolf.

Schaeffer’s Vision and Agatha’s Mystical Evolution

Jac Schaeffer, who was the head writer for WandaVision, returns as the mastermind behind this series. Schaeffer’s deep fascination with Agatha was clear from the start, as she wanted to expand on what made the character so intriguing. “Agatha is so proud of being a witch,” Schaeffer says. “She’s obviously hiding so much in her past, and that creates a fabulous segue from WandaVision.”

Expect a blend of mystery, reveals, and horror as Agatha All Along takes the puzzle-box format of WandaVision and goes deeper into the occult, darker side of magic in the Marvel Universe. Schaeffer emphasizes, “This show is darker. We lean very hard into the horror. The ‘witchiness’ is something we haven’t really seen.” Watch the trailer below”

Agatha Unleashed: Hahn’s Take on the Character

For Kathryn Hahn, this is a chance to explore a whole new side of Agatha—one that isn’t hiding behind the cheery Agnes persona we met in WandaVision. Hahn brings Agatha’s sarcastic, confident, and slightly masochistic nature to the forefront, making her a more complex anti-hero than ever. “The character I had played in WandaVision was its own specific bird,” Hahn explains. “That is who she is, with her nasty magic, her assertiveness, her being so sarcastic and mean.” But now, we get to dig deeper into her backstory, exploring the origins of witchcraft in the MCU.

The Coven of Outsiders

The heart of Agatha All Along revolves around building a coven. Alongside Agatha and Teen, the story brings together a group of very different witches: potions witch Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata), protection witch Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn), divination witch Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone), and Green Witch Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza). Oh, and let’s not forget the non-witch, Sharon Davis (Debra Jo Rupp), whose presence shakes things up in its own way.

Each witch is a bit of an outsider, reluctant to bond with the others. But the story is ultimately about the power of community and finding strength in numbers. “Through the circle of togetherness and through harmonizing—both literally and figuratively—they are able to reconnect with their naturally existing internal power,” Schaeffer says. Agatha, however, isn’t much of a team player at first. “At the beginning she’s kind of a twisted ringleader,” Hahn reveals, describing Agatha’s struggle to rally her coven and project confidence even without her powers.

Practical Magic and Witchy Vibes

A big part of Agatha All Along is the use of practical effects, keeping with the hands-on magic that made WandaVision so enchanting. Schaeffer explains that Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, was thrilled about bringing back practical magic for this series. Classic fantasy films like The Wizard of Oz and The Dark Crystal were inspirations, aiming to create a tactile, earthy feel for the witchcraft in the show.

The magic of practical effects was something Schaeffer discovered firsthand during WandaVision. “On Agatha All Along, our cast got to walk on the actual Witches’ Road,” she shares. And Hahn couldn’t agree more about the importance of the hands-on effects: “I am so ready for [audiences] to laugh, to be surprised, to have some actual jump scares, and to fall in love with all these witches.”
