Acclaimed actor Adrien Brody leans fully into the agony of tax season in TurboTax’s latest Super Bowl outing, transforming routine financial stress into full-blown existential drama.
Created by R/GA and directed by MJZ’s Craig Gillespie, the spot marks TurboTax’s 13th consecutive appearance in the Big Game and stars the Oscar winner playing a heightened version of himself. The film opens in torrential rain, with Brody delivering a raw, emotionally charged monologue worthy of an awards-season prestige drama. Then comes the interruption. Cut.
Brody is informed that he’s meant to play “The Expert,” part of TurboTax’s ongoing campaign positioning its human experts as the ones who take the pain out of taxes. The problem? There’s no pain left for him to tap into. What follows is a meta spiral, as Brody questions the very foundation of his career if he’s no longer allowed to brood, suffer, or emotionally unravel on cue.
The self-aware performance riffs on Brody’s reputation for intensity, flipping it into comedy as he grapples with a world where tax season can actually be… manageable. Without turmoil, without anguish, who is Adrien Brody? Watch below:
There’s also a 2-minute version TurboTax released:
The campaign builds on a teaser rollout that introduced Brody as “The Expert,” including behind-the-scenes-style clips of him rehearsing in his trailer. Wild postings across New York City and Los Angeles further leaned into the conceit, positioning Brody as both a seasoned professional and a reluctant comic lead.
The 45-second Super Bowl LX spot will air just before halftime on February 8, following a 30-second pre-game teaser. A two-minute extended cut is running across TurboTax’s owned channels, retail locations, and in cinemas nationwide.
Last year, TurboTax’s Big Game spot starred Issa Rae and was directed by Traktor through Stink Films, continuing the brand’s strategy of pairing humor with cultural self-awareness. This year, with Brody at the center, TurboTax turns tax relief into high drama, and then promptly takes the drama away.
