A24’s apocalyptic thriller Civil War held its ground at the top of the box office for the second consecutive weekend, earning $11.1M. Despite a 56% decline from its opening weekend, the film’s ten-day total now stands at $44.9M domestically.

According to Screen Dollars, this places it on track to surpass Uncut Gems to become A24’s second highest-grossing film, with a potential to reach the elusive $100M milestone.

Meanwhile, Universal’s Abigail finished in second place with an opening weekend of $10.2M. The film, a modern take on the character from Universal’s 1936 classic Dracula’s Daughter follows a group of kidnappers who find themselves facing a vampire child named Abigail.

Starring Melissa Berrara, Daniel Jonathan Stevens, Kathryn Love Newton, and Aleisha Weir, Abigail garnered good reviews from critics (83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (88%). However, with a production budget of $28M, it may struggle to reach profitability with an estimated target of $70M worldwide.

In third place, Warner Bros.’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earned $9.5M, marking a 39% decline from the previous weekend. With a total of $171.6M domestically after 24 days, the film has a chance to become the top-grossing Godzilla movie of all time. Comparing it to the 2014 Godzilla this year’s film has consistently outperformed its predecessor in subsequent weekends, boasting a 92% box office comparison.

Lionsgate’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare rounded out the top four with an opening weekend of $9.0M. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the film tells the story of a special forces organization formed during WWII by Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming. Despite mixed reviews from critics (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences gave it a solid 94% rating. With a production budget of $60M, it will need strong ticket sales to recoup its investment.

Lastly, Sony and Crunchyroll’s anime feature Spy x Family Code: White debuted in fifth place with an opening of $4.9M. Based on the bestselling manga series, the film centers on a family of spies entering a cooking competition with global implications.

Sony produced the film in both Japanese with English subtitles and an English-dubbed version. However, after a disappointing opening, Sony may be reflecting on the success of Dragon Ball: Superhero which earned $38.1M domestically, the highest for any Crunchyroll release in the U.S. market.

The total box office earnings for all films this weekend amounted to $65.4M, a significant decline from the $124.9M from the same weekend last year, largely due to the success of Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

There is growing concern that the oversaturation of horror films, with 26 scheduled for wide release this year, may be impacting audience interest, despite their relatively low budgets compared to other genres. The industry will be watching closely to see if this trend continues and its effects on major studios and exhibitors.
