The 2025 Writers Guild Awards nominations have been postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. Initially scheduled for January 9, the announcement was first delayed to January 13 and has now been further postponed.
In a joint statement, the Writers Guild of America East and West branches said, “Due to ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area, we will be delaying the announcement of Writers Guild Award nominees until further notice.”
This postponement follows similar delays by other organizations. The Producers Guild has twice postponed its film and TV nominations announcements due to the fires. Additionally, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended its voting window until January 19 and rescheduled its nominations announcement to January 23. The American Society of Cinematographers has also delayed its awards nomination announcements.
Several awards season events, including the Critics Choice Awards and the BAFTA Tea Party, have been postponed or canceled in light of the wildfires. However, the Grammy Awards are proceeding with their February 2 show date, aiming to raise funds for wildfire relief efforts and honor first responders.
As of January 13, the wildfires have resulted in at least 24 fatalities and the destruction of over 12,000 structures. The Palisades Fire has burned approximately 23,713 acres with 14% containment, while the Eaton Fire has consumed about 14,117 acres with 33% containment. Strong Santa Ana winds continue to exacerbate the situation, complicating containment efforts.
The 2025 Writers Guild Awards ceremonies are currently scheduled to take place simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles on February 15. Honorees include Bill Lawrence, set to receive the Herb Sargent Award for comedy excellence, and Scott Frank, who will receive the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement.
