Shia LaBeouf is facing two misdemeanor counts of simple battery following his arrest in New Orleans during Mardi Gras weekend. The 39-year-old actor was taken into custody after an alleged altercation outside a bar in the French Quarter. According to People, LaBeouf is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.
Video obtained by TMZ shows the actor shirtless on the street and later receiving medical attention from paramedics after the incident. Details surrounding what sparked the confrontation have not been confirmed.
LaBeouf had traveled to New Orleans last week to attend Mardi Gras festivities. The arrest adds to the actor’s history of legal issues.
In 2017, he was arrested in Savannah, Georgia on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication. At the time, LaBeouf publicly apologized for his behavior, which included shouting profanities at arresting officers inside a hotel lobby. In a statement shared on X, he said he was ashamed of his actions and acknowledged struggling with addiction.
LaBeouf, who has struggled with alcohol addiction throughout his adult life, explained: “I am deeply ashamed of my behavior and make no excuses for it. I don’t know if these statements are too frequent or not shared often enough, but I am certain that my actions warrant a very sincere apology to the arresting officers, and I am grateful for their restraint. The severity of my behavior is not lost on me.”
He added, “My outright disrespect for authority is problematic to say the least, and completely destructive to say the worst. It is a new low. A low I hope is a bottom. I have been struggling with addiction publicly for far too long, and I am actively taking steps toward securing my sobriety and hope I can be forgiven for my mistakes. (sic)”
The Transformers star’s arrest was caught on camera and, in the video clip, LaBeouf was heard yelling and swearing at the officers. He said, “I have rights! I’m an American. You got me in my hotel, arresting me in my hotel for doing what, Sir?”
Further details about the New Orleans incident have not yet been released.
