Somebody save Tom! Former Smallville star Tom Welling, best known for portraying a young Clark Kent, was arrested this weekend in Yreka, California for driving under the influence (DUI).
According to TMZ, the incident took place shortly after midnight on Sunday in an Arby’s parking lot, where local authorities took Welling into custody. Reports indicate that the actor’s blood alcohol level was at or above 0.08%, the legal limit in the U.S. for impaired driving.
Driving under the influence carries legal and personal consequences. While Welling likely won’t face jail time, he could receive a license suspension and be required to attend DUI classes.
His mugshot, released by law enforcement, serves as a stark reminder of the real-life consequences of impaired driving.
The arrest has sparked mixed reactions from fans, with some expressing disappointment that the former Superman actor has landed in legal trouble. Given the legacy of his Smallville character as a symbol of truth and responsibility, the situation has cast a shadow over his reputation.
Welling and Michael Rosenbaum (who played Lex Luthor on Smallville) have long teased plans for an animated continuation of the beloved superhero series. However, the project remains stalled, awaiting approval from Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios.
“We need Warner Bros. and DC to let us do it,” Welling shared in October. “We’ve got [creators] Al Gough and Miles Millar, who are very busy with Wednesday, but they want to write it. We just need the go-ahead.”
Despite enthusiasm from the original Smallville cast, the revival remains in limbo, lacking a greenlit script or an animation studio attached. With DC Studios prioritizing other projects, it’s unclear if Welling and Rosenbaum will get the opportunity to bring their passion project to life.
While Welling’s DUI arrest is unlikely to derail his career, it comes at an unfortunate time as he continues advocating for Smallville’s animated return.
