Looks like the band is coming back together. It turns out Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. will be donning a new iron mask and returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after his exit in 2019. But not as Iron Man. Downey will return in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, as the iconic villain Doctor Doom.
Originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Marvel Studios decided to rebrand as Avengers: Doomsday after Jonathan Majors’ arrest last year. Rumors say a new Kang has been cast. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2026. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, will follow a year later in May 2027, likely concluding the Multiverse Saga.
The biggest revelation at the Hall H panel was Downey Jr.’s comeback to the MCU, taking on the role of Doctor Doom. He is set to appear in both upcoming Avengers films, which will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the masterminds behind Avengers: Endgame. The Russo brothers’ proven track record makes them the ideal choice to guide Marvel Studios through these critical chapters of the Multiverse Saga.
At the panel, Downey revealed himself as Doctor Doom, although it remains unclear if the mask he wore will be the character’s final look. Watch below.

REELated:
Downey’s return to Marvel follows his recent Oscar win for Oppenheimer. While it’s unlikely we’ll see his face as Doctor Doom, there are hints from the comics about a possible familial connection between Doom, Iron Man, and Kang.
Marvel Studios also unveiled the official titles for both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. In the comics, Doctor Doom played a crucial role in both versions of Secret Wars, and it’s anticipated he will deal with Kang’s Variants before attempting to dominate the entire Multiverse.
Stephen McFeely will write both movies, though he will be working solo without his usual writing partner Christopher Markus.
Many fans were hoping for an Avengers vs. X-Men announcement, but it appears Marvel Studios is not rushing to introduce the X-Men into the MCU just yet, even after the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine.
Can. Not. Wait.
