UPDATE #2: Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were killed by their son, Nick Reiner, multiple sources have confirmed to PEOPLE. The outlet also claims that Reiner’s daughter, Romy, discovered her parents. Rob Reiner was 78. Michele Singer Reiner was 68.
Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to a medical emergency around 3:30 p.m. at the couple’s residence on the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue. Firefighters discovered a man and a woman deceased from fatal laceration wounds inside the home. LAPD officers were immediately dispatched for an ambulance death investigation, and the department’s Robbery-Homicide Division has taken over the case.
In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, Nick Reiner spoke openly about his long struggle with drug addiction, which began in his early teens and led to years of instability, including periods of homelessness and repeated stays in rehab. He said those experiences later inspired the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.
At the time, Nick told PEOPLE he had returned to Los Angeles and was reconnecting with his family after years of hardship.
Reiner leaves behind a final completed directorial project. According to IMDb, the film features live concert footage of the fictional band Spinal Tap performing at Stonehenge alongside major real-world music artists and is scheduled for release next year.
Reiner was a defining figure in American film and television. He rose to fame portraying Mike “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family before becoming an acclaimed director, helming classics such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally, and The American President. Younger audiences may recognize him from his role as Jess’ father Bob on New Girl or his recent appearance in Season 4 of The Bear as businessman Albert Schnur.
Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer and activist. The couple had three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Reiner also has a daughter, Tracy, from his first marriage to director Penny Marshall.
There was a heavy police presence at the Brentwood property Sunday evening as investigators processed the scene. Public records list the home as owned by the Reiners.
