Power of the Dog, Succession win at cloaked Golden Globe Awards

It was like the HFPA wore Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. After a year of controversy and scandals, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the winners of the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards via Twitter on Sunday night. No media or celebrities were in attendance. There was no red carpet. WandaVision was shut out.

And there was no free booze.

The Power of the Dog (Netflix) won the Golden Globe Award best drama and Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story (20th Century/Disney) took home the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy. Director Jane Campion picked up the best director trophy for helming The Power of the Dog, and Kodi Smit-McPhee won best supporting actor for the western. West Side Story star, newcomer Rachel Zegler was named Golden Globe best actress in a musical or comedy, and her co-star Ariana DeBose took home the supporting actress prize.

Nicole Kidman won the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama for Being the Ricardos and Will Smith (King Richard) took home best actor. Andrew Garfield webbed up best actor in a musical or comedy for his amazing performance in tick, tick … Boom!

For TV, Succession was named best drama series and Hacks best musical or comedy series. Both are from HBO. Succession star Jeremy Strong was named best actor in a drama and co-star Sarah Snook picked up best supporting actress. Hacks star Jean Smart earned best actress in a musical or comedy. Michaela Jaé Rodriguez (Pose) won best actress in a drama, and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) took home best actor in a musical or comedy.

The HFPA has been in a whirlwind of scandals since the 2021 show, when it was revealed that the HFPA had no Black members and participated in questionable business practices. NBC pulled out of the broadcast for this year’s ceremony.

Since then the HFPA has diversified its membership and rewrote its bylaws. HFPA President Helen Hoehne announced this year’s nominees at a scaled-down event in December, where she was joined by Snoop Dogg in reading the nominations.

At the opening remarks during Sunday’s Golden Globe event, Hoehne said, “We’re going to be outspoken about what we’re learning and challenge others to join us with members from more than 50 countries. We have a unique place in the awards universe.”
