Power Book IV: Force editor Jacques Gravett named Finalist in LA Screenplay Awards Diversity Initiative

Los Angeles

Filmmaker Jacques Gravett, ACE, has been recognized as a finalist in the esteemed Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards Diversity Initiative V for his captivating screenplay, A Singer’s Journey.

Gravett’s script, which has been a labor of passion for over a decade, confronts the pervasive issues of systemic racism and corruption within the music industry during the 1950s and 60s. Loosely inspired by the experiences of former Temptations original lead singer Paul Williams, A Singer’s Journey delves into the struggles faced by early Black musicians fighting for recognition and justice.

The narrative centers on Lucas, a naive teenager navigating an unjust system dominated by discriminatory forces and white gatekeepers. Gravett skillfully portrays Lucas’s transformation into a hardened artist, resisting the oppressive structures of the recording industry.

The recognition from the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards Diversity Initiative V underscores the significance of Gravett’s storytelling. Founded by a team of seasoned Hollywood professionals with over 1,000 produced credits and a century of collective industry experience, the competition boasts a distinguished roster of Senior Judges, including multiple Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and WGA Award winners.

Expressing gratitude for the finalist selection, Gravett reflects, “A Singer’s Journey is not just a script; it’s a testament to the resilience of Black artists who faced insurmountable challenges. Being a finalist in the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards Diversity Initiative V is an honor, and I am thrilled that this narrative is being recognized.”

Gravett, ACE is an accomplished film editor known for his exceptional contributions to various film and television projects including STARZ’s Power Book IV: Force, the Apple TV series Swagger, the critically acclaimed Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, the Golden Globe-winning series The Shield, and the Peabody Award-winning series Battlestar Galactica.
