Sabrina Carpenter drew sharp criticism from animal rights group PETA after incorporating a live bird into her performance at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
The 26-year-old pop star took the stage at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday night, Feb. 1, where she performed her hit song Manchild. During the performance, Carpenter was seen holding a small white bird in her palm, a moment that quickly sparked backlash online.
PETA condemned the stunt in a statement posted on X, calling the decision “stupid and cruel” and directly referencing lyrics from Manchild in its criticism. The organization argued that the loud noise, bright lights, and handling would have caused fear and distress to the bird, adding that animals belong free in their natural environments, not under the pressures of a live televised performance.
In a follow-up post, PETA questioned the choice more bluntly, suggesting that bringing a live bird onstage in 2026 reflected poor judgment and urging artists to leave animals out of Grammy performances altogether.
The organization also took aim at Lady Gaga, criticizing what appeared to be a feather-heavy costume worn during her performance of “Abracadabra.” PETA reiterated its stance that feathers belong on birds, not in fashion, and warned that birds suffer whether feathers are removed from living animals or taken after death.
While issuing criticism, PETA also used the night to spotlight artists it views as allies. The group praised Cher, who received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, citing her long-standing advocacy for animal welfare, including efforts to protect captive elephants and vulnerable dogs.
PETA also applauded Billie Eilish, congratulating her on winning Song of the Year for “Wildflower.” The organization highlighted Eilish’s vegan lifestyle and ongoing commitment to animal-friendly values, calling her an example of compassion paired with cultural influence.
The mixed reactions underscored how high-profile Grammy moments can quickly turn into flashpoints, especially when animal welfare enters the spotlight.
