The internet had a collective double-take on Friday when Uber’s verified X account (formerly Twitter) appeared to slide into the comments of OnlyFans creator Sophie Rain, not for a brand collab, but for grocery money.
Rain, who has over 4 million followers, went viral this week after pledging to send grocery funds to families affected by the halt in SNAP benefits amid the ongoing U.S. government shutdown. “I used to live off food stamps, so I get it,” Rain said in the original video. “This week, I’m gonna be paying for people’s groceries.”
Moments later, Uber’s official X account replied: “Xoxosamyo on PayPal 😭💖”’ The post was quickly deleted — but not before Rain grabbed the receipts.
“Uber you better start paying your social media interns more because this is CRAZY,” she posted, sharing a screenshot of the message. Then, in an unexpected twist of holiday spirit, Rain followed up with: “Got you tho samy 🤞🤞,” confirming she sent $250 to the PayPal handle “samyo.”
“In a statement to Ruthless Media, Rain explained her decision: “I get hundreds of payment requests a day, but seeing a verified Uber account with crying emojis and a PayPal handle threw me. At first I thought someone hacked their account. Then I realized, no — this is probably just an underpaid intern trying to get fed like the rest of us. So I sent the money. What else am I gonna do, let Uber go hungry?”
She added, “If your social media intern is out here publicly asking OnlyFans girls for help with groceries, maybe your company should take a break from the self-driving cars and pay them a livable wage. Just a thought.”
Uber has not commented publicly on the incident. The now-deleted message continues to circulate via screenshots and memes.
The “Team Sophie” movement
Rain has spent the past week wiring out $200–$275 per recipient via PayPal and Cash App, labeling transfers with notes like “grocery help – team Sophie.” In one instance, she sent $200 to a homeless follower in Colorado; another who commented, “I doubt I’ll get picked,” received $275 within hours.
“I’m hoping this inspires other creators to step up because we are in a position to make a change,” Rain said. The USDA paused SNAP disbursements in early November, instructing states to reduce payouts by roughly 35 percent — a move currently under review in court.
Online reaction to Rain’s generosity — and Uber’s apparent blunder — has been overwhelmingly positive. “You’re a beacon of kindness in chaotic times,” one user wrote. Another added, “This is what using your platform looks like.”
As for Uber, let’s just say it’s not often a global tech giant ends up on the receiving end of an OnlyFans grocery fund. File this one under: brand misfires we can’t stop watching.
