New ‘Joker’ trailer drops before Venice premiere

The Reel 360 team was not a fan when Warner Bros announced a film dedicated completely to the Joker.

The first question we asked ourselves was, “What’s next – Mr. Freeze?”

Don’t get us wrong, we love Batman’s greatest villain, but we’re not that interested in his origin.

That was what made Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight so interesting. The Joker, played by Oscar-winner Heath Ledger, was an enigma. No one knew anything about his history.

So no dis to Joaquin Phoenix. He is a great actor, but we had no real interest in Todd Philips take on the “Clown Prince of Crime.”

Until this trailer dropped.

With close to 8m views already, the R-rated film looks to be a mix of Batman and Robert De Niro’s dark comedy, The King of Comedy.

It features plenty of amazing new footage and some noteworthy reveals. Philips sheds more light on Arthur Fleck’s transformation into Batman’s greatest foe, it’s beginning to get easier and easier to see why there’s already Oscar buzz surrounding the DC Comics adaptation. Watch below:

The movie, which Todd Philips said in an interview with the LA Times took him a year to convince Warner Bros to make, doesn’t appear to be sticking to the comic books in any way, which could disappoint some hardcore fans. But there is a definitive origin story for The Joker, that makes the Reel 360 team extremely curious about it.

Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:

Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night… but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Opening in theaters on October 4, 2019, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, Brett Cullen, Bryan Callen and Robert De Niro.
