NeueHouse, destination for creatives, to shut down and file for Chapter 7

Neuehouse

NeueHouse, the members club and co-working space known for hosting film and TV premieres, screenings, and industry conversations in Los Angeles and New York, is closing and preparing to file for bankruptcy.

The company notified members on Wednesday evening that the final day of operations will be Friday, September 5. NeueHouse said it plans to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the process that typically involves liquidating assets.

A note to members was posted on the website:

To our NeueHouse Community,

For over a decade, NeueHouse has served as a center of creativity, community, design and innovation where trailblazers have convened to push boundaries and discover new ideas. Our mission has always been to provide a space for creators, innovators and thought leaders to gather and connect. Thanks to you, that mission became a reality.

Although NeueHouse has created an extremely valuable business that is prized by members and event hosts, unfortunately, it has been burdened by legacy liabilities. Despite our best efforts to find a sustainable path forward – including exploring every possible solution to address these challenges – we have made the very difficult decision to wind down the business and close NeueHouse. Our last day of operations will be this Friday, September 5th.

While this is certainly not the outcome we envisioned for our business, we believe it is the most responsible path for all our stakeholders, though we deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our valued employees, members and customers.

Our plan is for all three of our locations—Madison Square, Hollywood and Venice Beach—to remain open until September 5th at 5:00 pm ET / 2:00 pm PT so that members can collect their belongings.

Thank you for being part of the NeueHouse community. While this chapter is coming to an end, we are proud of what we have built together and the community of creativity that will continue to live on through each of you.

With gratitude,
The NeueHouse Board

It was not immediately clear what liabilities led to the decision. The club had been running an aggressive campaign during the earlier part of the summer to solicit new members.

NeueHouse operates locations in New York’s Madison Square neighborhood, Hollywood, and Venice Beach. The venues became frequent homes for entertainment events and brand programs, with clients ranging from Disney and Paramount to CAA and Amazon. Membership drew creatives across film, TV, media, fashion, and design, as well as tech and startup founders, pairing shared workspaces with a steady slate of talks and cultural programming.

The Venice property opened less than three years ago in a building owned by producer Tony Bill. Earlier this year the company also moved into media with the podcast series My Hollywood Story with Stacey Wilson Hunt.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to break this story.
