Merman has announced the signing of director Ritesh Gupta for commercial representation in the US. Gupta, an Emmy-nominated filmmaker and former award-winning sports journalist and creative director, has gained renown for crafting some of the most impactful and culturally resonant brand films of recent years.
Gupta’s storytelling approach centers on truth and identity, blending the journalistic authenticity he honed in his earlier career with an emotional intelligence cultivated through documentary filmmaking. This distinctive style has made him a sought-after creative force in advertising, with an impressive portfolio that includes viral hits like Budweiser’s “Dwyane Wade: This Bud’s for 3” and Beats by Dre’s “You Love Me”, which garnered multiple awards under his leadership as Group Creative Director at Translation.
Gupta’s accolades include two Emmy nominations, four Webbys, six AICP awards, eight Cannes Lions, 25 Clios, and recognition from ADCOLOR, the ANDYs, and the Immortal Awards, where his work earned Ad of the Year honors.
“Ritesh brings a unique perspective to his storytelling,” said Ellen Clarke, Merman’s Global Director. “He has the ability to uncover the layers of a narrative and its characters, weaving them together in a way that is both impactful and authentic. His connection to talent and his ability to reveal the heart of a story make him an exceptional addition to the Merman roster. We’re thrilled to have him on board.”
Expressing his enthusiasm for the partnership, Gupta said, “I’m so thrilled to be joining the roster for Merman. As an industry outsider, I took my time researching the right fit, and in Merman, I found a company that aligns with my ethos and demonstrates a genuine care for their directors. They also have an unwavering commitment to pushing the craft of filmmaking. I’m excited about what we’ve accomplished already and what lies ahead.”
Gupta’s recent projects include directing “The Next Golden Era is Now”, part of the NHL’s latest campaign celebrating the league’s evolution into a faster, more skilled, and entertaining era. Created with agency Highdive, the spot features Gen Z NHL stars poking fun at being labeled “lazy” while delivering high-energy action on and off the ice. The campaign was a hit with audiences and contributed to the NHL being named Ad Age’s Marketer of the Year in 2024.
Gupta also helmed “Tipping,” another NHL campaign installment that humorously juxtaposes the art of tipping a puck past goalies with everyday tipping etiquette. Featuring NHL stars and a quippy cameo from Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand, the spot was lauded for its sharp wit and dynamic visuals. A third installment, also directed by Gupta, is set to debut in February.
With a track record of creating campaigns that resonate across cultures and demographics, Gupta is poised to continue delivering work that not only entertains but also provokes thought and shifts perspectives. His partnership with Merman signals a shared commitment to elevating the art of storytelling in advertising.
Reel 360 News wishes Ritesh the best of luck at Merman.
